Best Practices
The family centered evaluation and analysis gives me, as an administrator, the ability to plan for and implement a family-centered child care community. Using an evaluation on a regular basis helps me to adjust the program as the needs of the parents change. The ideas of the parents and families guide the workshop topics and have become an important part of how we run our program. One area that our program could become more family centered is in two-way communication. We communicate through notes, flyers, phone calls, newsletters, parent conferences, bulletin boards and daily conversation but we would like to add emails or a white board at the entrance with highlights of our weekly activities.
Knowledge of how to establish and maintain good communication and partnerships with families, and to promote strong and meaningful family involvement in the program is a challenge that we are working on everyday. Our main form of communication is at drop off and pick up times and that came to light during the final analysis in the Family Input section. The family centered improvement plan that was part of this class was very detailed and helped us determine what we should begin improving. The parent workshops that we are actively involved in assist us in building community between staff and families as we work as a team towards a common goal. Building community during workshops can begin with ice breaker activities to help everyone feel more comfortable in group setting.
